“Train up a child in the way he should go,
Even when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
Proverbs 22:6 KJV
Malnutrition has been an issue for many years in our country due to poverty and lack of basic health education in most of the families. Government agencies through the Department of Social Welfare & Dev’t and Department of Health and other private organization continue to provide solution by establishing feeding programs and other activities to address the concern, but undernutrition still continues. This affects the child’s physical development. They are not able to reach their full potential thus affecting the formation of country’s human capital.
The Sambayanihan Center in Lucena Branch, in cooperation with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Barangay 10 in Lucena City started the “Alagang TSPI Program”. Thirty (30) undernourished kids who are children or relatives of TSPI MBAI members participated the Alagang TSPI Program
Aside from the regular feeding activities which lasted for 90 days. The “full meals” were designed by the City Social Welfare Development (CSWDO-DSWD) of Lucena to ensure that the participants reached the desired weight of the children. Basic daily food items such as bread, milk and eggs were provided.
The children were also taught proper hygiene. Lectures on proper hand washing, dental hygiene, how to fix hair and cut nails where given. Soap and face towel, toothbrush and toothpaste, combs, nail cutter and face powder were also provided. There was also a free hair cut by trained barbers in the area.
There was a weekly spiritual nourishment activity. The participants were given pencils, crayons and tracing pads for them to draw their dreams and aspirations in life. Aside from those activities, each participant was given preloved toys, preloved clothes and brand-new slippers.
Weekly weight monitoring was conducted to determine if there were positive changes in the participants’ physical well-being. The goal was for each participant to reach the right weight at the end of the 90 days program.
This activity will also be conducted in the Naga Sambayanihan Center in Camarines Sur this July 2023.
